I enjoyed the most recent podcast conversation. I would add that something the Western evangelical church needs to re-consider is the relationship between power and authority. When I watched the video of the girl being thrown from her desk, one of the first things that came to mine was that the abused his power. When people with power and privilege use their power excessively, one of the many consequences is that their authority is damaged and made less relevant.

Jemar points out the heaviness of the cultural narrative of “winning” , more accurately, “not losing.” This orientation is largely based in sin and what Timothy Keller refers to as the “self-salvation” project. We all must be aware of the power relationships we have with others.

It is challenging for our society, in particular, white, western, suburban, and culturally/politically conservative evangelical Christians to recognize how some of our responses and attitudes are, as Dr. Soong-Chan Rah writes are captive to these more western power ideals and privilege narratives.

Well said, Ed! That is a very important perspective. Thank you for listening!

Loved this podcast, guys! Just a quick word about Martin O’Malley: don’t trust him. Dude locked up so many black men in Baltimore under his “zero tolerance” crime strategy as mayor and never apologized for it.
