Chapter 5: The Good Book

Note: Because of our previous discussion we are skipping chapter 4. Today we take a look at The Good Book

“God’s Word is the oxygen that He uses to bring us to life. And God’s Word is the very same oxygen that we need to continually breathe as we press forward. If we stop taking in God’s Word, the consequences are deadly. The good life is sustained by faith in God’s Word.” –Trip Lee

The Bible is a collection of writings penned by men led by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21). But as Trip rightly acknowledges, the Bible is often quoted but not followed. The Bible, though, is not simply a book of stories, it’s the Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16). God reveals himself to us through his Word. And, again, we don’t go to God’s Word to simply know the stories in the Bible, we go to God’s Word to know Him. The Word also instructs and guides us as we walk out our faith. The Word has been given to us to help feed our faith. Trip suggests four ways for us to read God’s Word: prayerfully, humbly, carefully and studiously, and often.

Questions: Have you been in God’s Word? If so, how has God used that time. Is reading God’s Word difficult for you? If so, what has been difficult (lack of time, lack of interest, etc.)? Do you believe that the Bible is breathed out by God (2 Timothy 3:16) or is that concept foreign to you?

I’d like to suggest an additional book to assist you if you find yourself not desiring to read God’s Word or pray, When I Don’t Desire God by John Piper.

Honestly, there are times when I'm reading God's Word, & my interest for it decreases. Why is this? Is it because I'm consumed with assignments for college, being a music education major, at Furman University? Am I overwhelmed from life's trials and tribulations? These are some of the questions I ask. For the last 3 months, I've extensively read the book of Jude. Trying to understand the meaning of it, and reading through the short book, repeatedly. The Lord has opened my mind to so much, through this book.

Those are great questions. I think we all have seasons of "dry" time in the Word. But I have to remember that even during times when I'm not leaping off my seat, I am still learning about the Lord and it is going into my head and prayerfully my heart. I think our temptation is to put it down and simply not read at all. Glad you are continuing to read--I believe God will honor it.

Something else I realized is that during trying and confusing times, we have to read His word, even if we don't feel like it. His word is inexhaustible, and our response should be God-glorifying.
